In the culture I was raised in God, with a capitol G wasn't a concept of the divine, it was/is a VERY specific deity with very specific traits etc.

God, capitol G, was not a generic term. so yes, it causes certain reactions to that very specific deity. Very specific monotheistic deity.

I regularly have people badger me about why can't I just use the term God to express my understanding of the cosmos, why can't I get over myself? I can't because as soon as someone in my culture uses God with a capitol G, they are referring to that monotheistic deity, and there in begins all the misunderstanding.

Misunderstanding continues when I speak of my faith, Pantheism and people who are unfamiliar with it say "Oh, so you believe everything is God", well, no, Pantheism has no god, no deity, no parallel to the concept of a deity with any personal traits.

God, with a capital G only serves to confuse, and people use it to make assumptions about my beliefs and experiences of life. I react because I've been bludgeoned and misrepresented SO many times.

Not sure if you are agreeing with me or commenting about what you think I said.

Just to clarify: I did NOT say those following 'spiritual beliefs', I said "religious person".

I will note that even if only a minority of a group exhibits some behavior, it affects dealing with all any member of the group unless every member is clearly labeled/identifiable. For example, what percentage of snakes are poisonous? What percentage of mushrooms are poisonous? In either case caution is almost instinctively invoked when dealing with one of either of those. To me this is an example of a 'wall' being put up.

I think that in the absence of God, the scientific atheists are going to roll over and destroy religion, spirituality and belief in an afterlife. Say goodbye to the sacred, say goodbye to selfless sacrifice, say goodbye to holiness, honor and respect. Say goodbye to virtue. Say goodbye to magic and say goodbye to true love. Once God is gone, what is left that is good, true, holy, respectable and inspiring?

By the way, for all you tree-huggers who think that nature is sacred, I use trees for firewood, to warm my weiners.

Here we go again; another anti atheist rant.

How is this foul mouthed tirade anything to do with the subject being discussed?

Yet more insults. Not against atheists for a change, against people who respect nature.
I hope your "weiners" get burned. Ouch!

I still think that turning away from God also means turning away from a lot of other things that make life beautiful: honor, love, commitment, devotion, sacrifice, holiness, awe, ... Without God, we're just a bunch of monkeys trying to outsmart each other for bananas; it's disappointing.
