Hello,

Warlock is a male witch, but Wiccans don't use the term due to the negative connotation it holds. I think Wiccans should get past the stigma behind Warlock just like the term Witch. I mean, a solitary Wiccan can be a Warlock without having to worry about breaking the oath between covens.

Just noticed this. Warlock/Warloch is a very old appellation and belong to the Cunning Folk and the time of the Witch Hunts in medieval Britain. One major feature of the Cunning Folk is that they were the first to face the wrath of the church and persecution without any results because they were protected by the local rural communities. ALSO another trait was "hiding in plain sight" and one example of this was in the priesthood, using the bible as a source of spells.
So, the accusation of Oath Breaker was true BUT it was their priestly oath that was being broken. The Cunning Folk gained a reputation as the best witch-finders but this was largely the CF accusing enemies - the Cunning Folk as the REAL witches were, in truth, morally ambiguous . selling curses, then charging the cursed person to remove said spells.
I am of the Cunning Folk and quite like "Warlock". You may think that the Cunning Folk have vanished from society but they are just hiding in plain sight again in various fields of Alternative/Complementary healing crafts.

Hello norseman,

Why is it that Wiccans changed the meaning of Warlock, "someone who breaks the oath between covens"? I read it from books and other sources regarding Warlock having negative connotations within the Pagan community particularly in Wicca.

By the way, Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
