Soul hurting or ego talking?

Our soul or inner being is the part of us that is connected to everything, the part of us that manifests our desires. Our soul is who we are. As they say we are a spiritual being having a human existence. But what happens if our soul is hurt or is unhappy?

This is how I have felt pretty much all my adult life (35 now) The result is constantly searching for something to fill the void whether than be alcohol, drugs, over spending, over eating, pornography the list is endless really. All bring temporary relief from the unhappiness but the unhappiness comes back. Its all very hard to explain but you will know what I mean if you experience it, its a feeling that something is not right, something is missing, you are not living the life you are supposed to be living.

The question is how do you go about healing your soul? Or is this all the ego talking?

Dear Irish Krishna,

I need a long time to think about your post.

I never thought about “soul” the way you wrote about it. Maybe I just never thought about it period.

Was it relief or a distraction?

In the past I found relief (or maybe it was just a distraction) in reading/watching things that potentially had a promise of change or relief, such as Eckhart Tolle, etc. The list is almost endless.

I am wondering why you did not say anything about those. This is a spiritual forum and I believe everyone here used some of those in their healing process.

For me they did bring change and/or relief but it was not great enough to change my overall quality of life or my perception of my quality of life.

As far as I am concerned this still beats the things that you have listed. I am familiar with some of them too in one form or another but for myself I always knew they were a waste of time or maybe even intentional destruction of my time.

I cannot tell you anything about the ego. You may be on the right track to understanding why you feel unhappy.

I have a good feeling that if you are persistent you’ll find the answers you are looking for. Good luck to you with that and have an exciting time finding those answers.

The human soul has no desires for itself whatsoever.
It is with you to record your life on planet earth.
Try PMA every day.
In pure light and truth.
Krsna.

This is exactly how I have felt. I have read countless self help books over the years, they act like a distraction as you say but once the excitement wears of theres no lasting change and they're soon forgotten about. I've read everything from Abraham Hicks to Vincent Peale.

It's because you lack definment beyond your daily struggle. Once our base needs are met we inevitably turn towards the question of how to spend our life and time. A hobby that interests you, a sincere desire to fill ones time with other people. Something with more meaning than wake up, go to work, go home, go to sleep. You're not alone but you're the only one who will really know how to find your way out.

Find the thing you enjoy doing. If you don't know what you enjoy then it's never too late to find something. try anything, try everything, don't do nothing because you won't find the missing piece that way.

Hi 1irishninja,

Sorry about calling you Irish Krishna -- but then Krisha really came and left a message for you. I am not a wise man. What Revya said definitely makes a lot of sense. That's the best human way to address the issue. It is really great that she/he found the way to say it.

In addition to this there are supehuman ("magical") ways to find answers to your question where you can stumble on the answer all by yourself. Unfortunately I am not anyone who could give you any clues but I am sending you my support in your search. I think things like Ekhart Tolle need to be practiced diligently plus be serious about what Revya said.

Hopefully you will come to it or it will come to you. Give yourself some rest time -- put your pain/ache/hurt on hold for a while and keep seeking and no overspending or overeating for the time being please.

A soul can not be unhappy or hurting. If you are hurting it is almost always the result of a discrepancy between the ego (body mind) and the intended path of spirit which is us.

Spirituality and some kind of therapy usually helps alot. Therapy (one on one and group) helps you bring memories and emotions to the surface so you can let them go. And it can be even more effective if combined with spirituality.

From what I've been learning, we receive dysfunction from our parents. But the point isn't blaming them, it's to recognize why we are the way we are. Some people have a hard time with this first step because they feel like they're betraying their family. But healing yourself is not betraying your family.

Also you might think about some kind of recovery program for the drugs and alcohol. Getting sober will help alot.

i do not think it is your soul is hurting. i think the body is. depression runs in my family. the self medicating of drugs and alcohol and sex all in an attempt to correct the feelings. it is a hard thing to deal with. meds saved my son's life.
