New Highly Sensitive Person

Hi there!

I'm LolKat and I found these forums through searching (and hoping!). I am a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), and I have been known to throw out random opinions because "vibes don't lie" and they haven't. I don't really like the term "sensitive" because I grew up believing sensitivity was weakness. I needed to toughen up, let the punches roll off, etc. Anyway, I am married and have 1 son. I have not told my husband I am an HSP because he will probably not believe a thing I say, so I keep it to myself.

I came to this forum because I was looking for like-minded people, who "get me." I want to feel a connection. When I say this to my husband, he doesn't understand what a connection to someone even is. He is very pragmatic and skeptical of many things. I'm actually pretty happy that he at least doesn't say anything about my other passion: tarot reading. I'm a beginner (when am I not??) and I give myself a weekly reading at the beginning of the month and a daily reading as well. I keep it all in a journal -another passion, reading and writing. I use music to restore myself to a more balanced place, so a lot of times, I'll either be listening to music, or bringing it up in conversation. Music has always been an outlet for me.

Anyway, hello! Any advice for particular threads I should check out are welcome. I'm currently at the beginning of the book: The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine N. Aron. Highly suggest this book for anyone to read, because we're out there, feelin' the vibes.

Just like you, I’m a HSP. I’m also in a very similar situation as you are with your husband. My fiancé, while open-minded, is definitely more drawn to the scientific side of things. I’ve been having to work really hard on not having that play too much to my same interests in that field. I don’t really talk to anyone too much about my beliefs/what has happened to me spiritually. Lately, I’ve been wanting to find more like-minded individuals to feel more at peace and at home with. We do not have to be alone. :) Nice to have you!

Welcome LolKat! You'll find you are certainly not alone in this forum. I, too, have struggled with anyone in my circle of family/friends understand me and I've always felt different. I went through a spiritual awakening of sorts not even a year into my marriage, so I know what it feels like to want to hide what's really going on with you in front of your husband, the skeptic. I chose to be open and honest with mine and while he doesn't quite understand it all, I have managed to open his mind and spiritual side a bit. In the end, we have nothing to lose by being ourselves!

I also love to write, listen to music and journal! Nice to have you here!

Thank you for the wonderful welcoming! I am very excited to make new connections, and learn more about subjects that interest me, as well as subjects that I've never even heard of! I will say that even though I am a HSP, (and I'm not sure if this is true for others or not), I cannot determine things through writing or texts unless it's a little more obvious. Basically, I don't consider that I "know" someone, truly, until I have met them in person. In fact, I wasn't able to meet my son until he was 5 days old due to complications with my heart, and during those 5 days I refused to name him! My mother-in-law was ready to name him herself! Lol

In a sense I am starting to have a certain tendency like this but I am not sure whether it is just me being sensitive or was I imagining things. But I sort of get it, because I have almost no way to turn it off too especially recently, being like a sponge or something that sucks up any type of energy everywhere in the street >_>

IndigoViolet, I know what you mean. Sometimes I worry I'm imagining things or projecting what I feel onto others. But other times I think: Was I really the only one seeing that coming? Or I'll get a certain feeling off of someone. There is a friend of my husband's that I feel uncomfortable around. Something just seems...off. So anytime he comes up in conversation to others, and they've never met this friend, I mention "Oh, yeah. His totally creepy friend." Lol
