Why are there so many different religions? For the same reason that no two people can agree on the perfect pizza toppings. Family tradition, cultural tradition, and personal likes and dislikes. Also, being a part of some traditions would feel as alien and bad as mixing anchovies and marshmallows on your pizza. You wouldn't allow yourself to eat/believe that, but someone out there would.

Perhaps there are those who would like nothing better than to see everyone upon one spiritual path and to have a big piece of the action so to speak.

Think a state religion is oppressing ? Just imagine a world religion that works hand in hand with equally oppressing one world religion leaders telling others what they should have on their 'pizza'. Some may be suckered into to this spiritual mindset, but the majority of people beyond the walls of this particular 'one religion' church are not.

Religions reflect the perspectives of us human beings who make them.

Every religion has, imho, rings of truth, but as human beings we construct the ideas for ourselves and, like a game of chinese whispers, the truth can sometimes get a little distorted as time goes on. There are billions of people in this planet, millions of ways of living, and thus millions of belief systems. It certainly doesn't mean they are all false.
