Not necessary, but the "best" way is diet and exercise along the lines I described, though variations to suit different individuals would apply.

It is quite difficult to maintain muscle mass while in a calorie deficit, and that's where exercise comes into the picture.

If a calorie deficit is too extreme, the body loses muscle mass, which makes it easier to gain fat in the future, and harder to lose it again.

A body that engages in strenuous exercise burns significantly more calories than an inactive body, so a combination of proper nutrition, light cardio, and resistance training to maintain muscle mass, is the ideal combination for fat loss.

You explained that very well Gem. Thank you.

Hi I have lost 9 stone or 126 pounds it took 18 months by changing my plate size using a red plate and exercise only walking and house work. I now have a new positive attitude towards food. It is hard work but well worth it for health reasons and confidence. Hope this helps?

Getting rid of eating addictions is definitely a MUST, because that's the key to losing weight aside from workout. I was never obese myself but still somewhat overweighted, and my method of losing weight simply consisted of living a bit healthier and eating less and also drinking lots of water. Remember; I am not an expert at this stuff because I merely tell it from my own experience and your body may function differently than mine. It may be possible as well that you need advanced help. But still, I hope it's worth giving it a try so good luck.

Yes, good point. Bodies all work a little bit differently even though all bodies need the same basic nutrients, so there are, like, rules of thumb, but each individual will approach it a bit differently.

Very simple, very common sense. Like all good spiritual advice.

Indeed. Some bodies easily get fat, some bodies never get fat at all, and then there are those bodies who both easily lose fat and store it (which is where I belong). My method of losing weight may not work for people with a different body type or with severe obesity, but as I said of course it's still worth giving it a go.

There's basic things that will work for near enough everyone, but it'll work in slightly different ways. Basically it's energy in vs energy out, and what that energy is transformed from and/or into, which is only two basic things, muscle and/or fat.

The main problem with weight loss is the loss of muscle mass, which one would want to avoid as much as possible, while maximising fat loss.

The trick is introducing a slight calorie deficit so you lose weight quite gradually, without losing too much muscle with it, and exercise helps to retain muscle mass as well as burning more calories. The extra burn has to come to come from fat.

When they say something like muscle burns 50 more times the calories of fat, that becomes more plausible when said muscle is exercised. For example, when I am weight lifting training I need 3200 cals to maintain my bodyweight (83-84kg), but I take 3500 to build up muscle (that's like 1000 more calories than I'd need if not training). This also puts on some fat, so I can't stay in a caloric excess for too long, and I have to go into a deficit, 2800 cals, to lose the fat, but I also lose some muscle when in a deficit. For me everything has to be very accurate, and I need much more protein that a person who does no exercise. A cyclist or runner would need far more carbs that I do. I mean, to assess what a person need to to do to 'lose weight' is quite specific to an individual and their lifestyle, but the basic math of energy in and out is the same.

1st off talk to your doctor is great advice.

Now what I did to lose 110 pounds in a little over a year was getting rid of processed foods, fast food, sodas, and almost everything that has high fructose corn syrup.
I added fresh turmeric to a lot of my dishes and way more fresh raw vegetables. I have a 1/2 teaspoon of raw honey, cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of maca powder in my coffee everyday. Since doing that I have more energy to do things. Read up on what the benefits of these are.

As far as metabolism goes I've been doing a test about that as I believe there is a correlation between it, hormone balance and the immune system. I have live with HIV for 20 years and I have found by increasing my intake of omega 3 fatty acids increases your metabolism. Numerous ways to get it, I personally use hemp oil in my own homemade salad dressings.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey and it is worth it.
