Lunar Eclipse Dec. 20th, 2010!

Watch for it! Monday Dec. 20th. I live in North America and I think almost everyone will see a complete one or near complete one.

This info is from an enewsletter from NASA Science News>>>

Coincidences (UPDATED): This lunar eclipse falls on the date of the northern winter solstice. How rare is that? Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone. A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual. Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on 2094 DEC 21."

WHEN TO LOOK: The total eclipse lasts more than an hour from 02:41 am to 03:53 am EST on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21st. Any time within that interval is a good time to look.

It is on the 21st is it not ? I have encountered a few that sat its the day before the solstice and in the UK it is cetainly on the 21st which is the solstice.

I loved the link Summerland and find myself looking forward to Tuesday the 21st because after then the days of the Sun begin to return. though I have gotten off very lightly with my customary SADs this year and been able to maintain a modicum of cheeryness.
