Probably my three favourite actors actually appear together in a film called 'Doubt' - Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, and Amy Adams. I especially love Adams, she's so freaking talented - it blows my mind that the same actor who played the delightfully dizzy princess in 'Enchanted' also played the seriously screwed up Camille Preaker in 'Sharp Objects' (which isn't a film, I know, but it's still a heck of a performance).

Doubt is one of those movies that I can't help but watch again every time I find it is on.

I can definitely understand that I didn't even mention Viola Davis, who has quite a small role (in terms of screen time, at least) but manages to leave a lasting impression regardless.

( Doubt was a bit intense for me to want to see again - except for the actors themselves, ex-Catholic), BUT:
I hardly EVER get the chance to stick this in somewhere --LOL!

Phillip Seymore Hoffman's grandmother was MY 3rd Grade teacher!!!
He came to our small town of 4-5000 in Central NY, farm country to visit...hahaha.
Trivia: Shhh. And btw, {I'm not making this up}, she was famously s-c-a-r-y strict , aka, mean to us little kids!!!
My sister 4 yrs older than me said the same thing decades later...kids never forget the scary ones!
I'm sure she was sweet with her little grandson.

(And, btw, in defense of Native spirit, movies are on TV all the time - esp now with Netflix, HBO, DVDs+ and our big screens!)

I think the draw for me is the extremely difficult position that Meryl Streep's character finds herself in, and how she manages to navigate it with rather a bit of success.

It's also the deep honesty of her character in admitting to her doubts.

I was also extremely moved by the performance of Viola Davis.

Interesting perspective, I hadn't thought of it like that - I was much more sympathetic towards the position of Hoffman's character, I thought he was just looking out for a vulnerable kid but ended up getting on the wrong side of a person (Streep) who was resistant to any change to the existing power structure.

Fantastic performance from Streep either way, though.

Fantastic performance from Streep either way, though.

You know the whole point of the story was that he was sexually abusing boys, right?

Oh sure, he played the whole card about being new and more liberal...but all the while it was a cover for what he was doing. Streep's character was just able to see right through it to what he really was.

I didn't think it was made clear if he had or hadn't been sexually abusing the kid, it was deliberately left ambiguous. Even Streep's character breaks down and confides to Adams' character that she's full of doubt (hence the title of the film, obviously) at the end.

I don't know, though, I think people are going to see what they want to see - I personally found Hoffman's character much more likable (and Streep's character very unlikable), so I want to believe that he was innocent. But I can see that there's circumstantial evidence that suggests otherwise, too.

Her doubt was with the system...the hierarchy of the Church...which saw fit to just cart him off to a new parish (in fact, a larger and more prestigious parish) and let him do what he may.

He was caught when she pretended to have called a nun from his previous parish. If he had nothing to hide, he wouldn't have protested so. That was the clincher. He had done it before and had been moved to her parish.

His sheep's clothing was his likeability. He played the role of the nice guy who will be your friend. His attentions came at a price, and his sheep's clothing dissolved when Streep confronted him. He threw everything at her that he could, and once he figured out she would not yield to threats, he tried to play on her sympathy. He said have you never committed a mortal sin? So he was finally admitting to what he had done, but trying to use her belief in forgiveness as a ticket to stay and keep up the status quo.

Streep could do nothing about the hierarchy of the Church, or how it chose to deal (or not deal) with predators. What she could do was not let it happen on her watch.

Yeah, I'm probably letting personal feelings cloud my judgment to be fair. Great film though, definitely gives you a lot to think about (probably too much in my case ).
