Do we really chose our lives before we are born?

Sorry folks I still don't get why someone would chose that kind of life. I don't believe he consciously chose it. Maybe the soul of the previous life chose it in which case it wasn't actually my cousin. Call me naive to these kinds of things but I think my cousin as I know him did not live until he was born. Although he was brain damaged he did have consciousness and his consciousness (for all intents and purposes) did not start until he was born. If his soul had a previous life and chose that then I believe that was beyond his control(especially if he forgot it)since I refuse to believe anyone would deliberately chose to live that kind of life(unless like I said they had to make some kind of wager or was being punished).

Great qustion and thread .I have always wanted to know before when we were born did we choose our current lives, and Maybe thats why the soul wants be tested when it comes into it's physical forum. Is that why others may have it rough growing up or it seems that some of us endure alot of pain because of how they came into this world. Another qustion what if you are detachted to your current incarnation ? and what if you wanted to go back in a certain decade and relive in that era because you felt that you belonged there.

So, there is a difference between this life conscious and higher conscious. girlsearching uses the term "soul" for higher conscious which is very helpful - as your soul "thinks" differently from you at times. It's easy to confuse the two, it's easy to think that what you think now is what your higher says to you, the two don't often coincide.

The problem goes much deeper than just your cousin. I think of those born to drug addiction, I think of those born to famine and won't live beyond a certain age. Or those in immense poverty. I think of those who choose abusive parents. As well as those handicapped.

And yes, my brain does rage "why".

I also believe that the soul chooses the circumstances of the life it enters. I vehemently disagree that your cousin was being punished for something by being born brain damaged.

Sometimes the soul needs to have life experiences like that in order to gain something for a future lifetime or to learn about something the soul might have done in a previous lifetime. It's not some punishment. It's a part of the evolution and learning of the soul.

A friend explained this to me once when I was talking about how simple my life really is in this lifetime. She reminded me of lifetimes where I was bent over a table with only candlelight to aid me as I wrote texts until my fingers could no longer straighten. Then, she explained to me that I had had SEVERAL really difficult or upsetting lifetimes in order to earn the karmic balance to have an easier life this time.

It's about balance and not punishment. The soul knows what it is doing.

Well then that makes two of us. However, that is only one explanation. Your explanation makes more sense to me. However, I still disagree that at a soul would chose that kind of life. If it's not being punished then why put yourself through that?

I never thought of myself as a continuation of souls before. My body and my being is just one soul and one that my consciousness is experiencing. I have been other souls( that I don't remember)and will come back as another soul(but it won't be me as I know it). At least this is what I am gathering from this thread.

Have you considered having a past life regression to reach a further understanding of this? Most of my insights and understandings come from regressions that I have had and this has brought me to my own understanding of how things like that do or do not work?

I prefer to see things for myself when I have big questions (at least when I can).

No and I have no idea how to go about doing that either. I am open to it though.

I usually google past life regression and the town that I am in. You can find practitioners that way. I recommend getting someone who is trained in counseling in the event unpleasant emotions come up.

Any hypnotist can do the regression, but sometimes emotions back up on us because we see things that relate to this lifetime, and we may want to talk through them with a professional.
