Was this empathy
The other day i was on my facebook when a msg came thru from a friend i have known for about 18 years we are not close but talk now and then anyway all the msg said was hi samantha how are you? I instantly got this profound feeling of sadness i thought it must be comin from him so i msg him back and said is it just me or do u not feel very happy today? He replied back saying i was right and how did i know well i said i wasnt sure but felt it while reading his msg. I have never had this before is it empathy?

Yes, that does sound like empathy. That's almost how I would experience picking up emotion too.

Empathy happens in lots of ways .sounds like.....reading the message you picked up the energy sent with it...or directly from your friend.....kinda like radar...smiles
