Split consciousness while lucid dreaming?

Just wondering if this is common?

It happened for the first time for me last night.

I realized that I was having two sets of thoughts simultaneously within this dream. One set of thoughts coming from inside my head and the other set within the dream itself.

Both sets were thinking different things simultaneously.

It was a bit bizarre.

That is an advanced skill, so not common.

Most commonly it occurs with one consciousness in the dream (1st person) and the other as a watcher (3rd person, fly on the wall) watching the same dream from the outside.

[advanced] combining the watcher with the another advanced skill, to alter the dream, allows for fun and interesting experiences. Basically the watcher sets up stuff for the 1st person dreamer to experience. Note that the watcher can also access the thoughts of the 1st person dreamer.

[very advanced] more than 2 separate consciousnesses at the same time are possible.

Wow....thank you for your reply :)

I don't consider myself as an advanced lucid dreamer yet, but this happened spontaneously. It was very interesting.

I had no idea there were other higher levels one could reach via lucid dreaming as far as consciousness goes. Its very exciting!

Thanks again for replying :)

Had this a couple of times, and it is definitely an experience that makes you think.

But if you think about it...when you are dreaming, if it is an experience that is "all in your head"(as some postulate), then what part of your mind is actually "thinking" in the dream?
So you are already of two minds when you are thinking in a dream.
When you also contact the outside mind...then it is technically of 3 minds.

But it is all how you slice your bread ;)

Can't even imagine what such a experience would be like. I'm happy you posted this possibility. Were the thoughts connection (one actual thought) or two different thoughts. If it is common it is hidden to be sure. Are you going to nurture the experience. As you know, when we sleep the right hemisphere becomes dominate and more active over while the left recedes.

Yes this has happened to me before, Twice actually. Once it happened where I was partially lucid in a dream and I was also simultaneously aware of myself sleeping in my bed. The other time was when I was sort of having two lucid dreams at the same time.. now that was pretty bizarre.
