Other than to a historian Spiritualist I question the value of books that are so old.

I'd be interested to learn why this book is listed here other than its relating to Spiritualism's early history, a specialist field in this Spiritualist's experience. Those who are indeed interested in the very early history of Modern Spiritualism are recommended to read Paul Gaunt's authoritative archive freely available from:

http://www.snu.org.uk/spiritualism/pioneer

More details about Paul Gaunt may be found here: https://www.arthurfindlaycollege.org/tutors/paul-gaunt/

Highly recommended for students and seekers.

The first link does not work.

The second link provides an answer to 'the values of books that are so old'. The author wrote:

'However, I felt my path was not in this direction and ended all my active work. Over the years and looking back at my time at AFC I became aware that our old Pioneers were mostly forgotten and neglected, I decided return to the platform as an SNU lecturer and took the SNU education advanced course on the History of Spiritualism etc, there I found serious errors in our basic history.'

I have studied the area where Modern Day Spiritualism originated and found it to be a brewing pot for various beliefs.

One practice that preceded Modern Day Spiritualism was how the book of Mormon was produced. Joseph Smith, Jr. sat behind a curtain, put his head inside his hat which had the Urim and the Thummim. He would speak out what he saw to those on the other side of the curtain who would write down what was spoken. The writer would speak out loud what was said and if it was what the Urim and the Thummim had revealed, then the next part of the message would be revealed.

A book I have read numerous times is:

PRIVATE DOWDING

A PLAIN RECORD OF THE AFTER-DEATH EXPERIENCES OF A SOLDIER KILLED IN BATTLE AND SOME QUESTIONS ON WORLD ISSUES ANSWERED BY THE MESSENGER WHO TAUGHT HIM WIDER TRUTHS

The book starts out by saying:

"is a book written using the technique of automatic writing. The medium claimed the spirit of ‘Thomas Dowding [a fallen soldier] was so real that he seemed to be in the room sitting at my elbow, prompting my pen’. This form of automatic writing was looked upon as ‘Spirit Communion’. The medium used to write the book was Wellesley Tudor Poole."

One part I enjoyed was

"Think of it! One moment I was alive, in the earthly sense, looking over a trench parapet, unalarmed, normal. Five seconds later I was standing outside my body, helping two of my pals to carry my body down the trench labyrinth towards a dressing station. They thought I was senseless but alive. I did not know whether I had jumped out of my body through shell shock, temporarily or for ever. You see what a small thing is death, even the violent death of war! I seemed in a dream. I had dreamt that someone or something has knocked me down. Now I was dreaming that I was outside my body. Soon I should wake up and find myself in the traverse waiting to go on guard... It all happened so simply. Death for me was a simple experience-no horror, no long-drawn suffering, no conflict."

Sounds like a good book.

This does indeed sound like an interesting book.

By the way, the story of Hazrat Inayat Khan ("THe Message of Our Time") has some very detailed descriptions of Spiritism from the perspective of a Master.

A book some might find of interest is"

BROTHER OF THE THIRD DEGREE

By WILL L. GARVER

BORDEN PUBLISHING COMPANY
ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA

Copyright 1894
By W. L. GARVER

On page 147, the book talks about Count Saint Germain.

It reads "Beside the Madame sat the man whom we had seen enter when we got out of the carriage; he was tall and sparely built, with long golden hair and a light, curly, chestnut beard. This man, whom I knew from his position at the table was the superior of all, had no certain age; his pale, serious face was not marked by a single wrinkle, yet I knew he was not young. His eyes were blue and shone with a fiery luster, and I noticed that his hands throbbed as they rested upon the table. That this personage may be no mystery, I will say that he was the celebrated Count de St. Germain who was a high initiate, and possessed the power of separating his eternal body from the form which dissolves."
