Islamic point of view domestic violence

Domestic violence and spousal abuse violate the Islamic principle of respect for human dignity; if severe enough, they may even violate the principle of respect for life. According to classical Islamic law, spousal abuse is grounds for a Muslim woman to initiate divorce. The extant biographies of Muhammad record him as never having hit a woman or even a child and as condemning those who did.

Thank you for your input

Salam-O-Alaykum Sabeelshah,

Thank you for your input about this sensitive topics about Muslims.
Indeed it is written in the Quaran that men are the protectors and maintainers of woman.
I also in the past, asked a Imam about the word used in the translation in english "beat"; he explained that the Quaran is translated from the original language it was written Arabic; so the meaning of the english word "beat", doesn't have the same significance and the word used today as in beating; it means more like a reprimand, nagging or a light tap on the shoulder with one finger.
One can not read the Quaran in parts and take action on only the parts that he find to justifies his actions...all the parts are to be taken into account to follow the right path and do the right thing. Contradictions help to stay in the middle way and take the right actions.
Allah is the most forgiving...so a good Muslim husband would want to be following Allah's guidance and so be forgiving as well, as take into account to be a protector and a maintainer as well if he has to reprimands; desobedience would be not to follow the guidance of Allah or the husband that would ask to follow the guidance of Allah as the Quaran was written for Muslim eg: eat pork in purpose, cheat, spy, gamble, drunk, drug etc...
it would not be desobedient of a wife not to do as asked if the husband ask the opposite of Allah's guidance of course.
Muslim have had a lot of bad publicity done from movies or other sources, but none of these represented the Teaching of Islam.
Thank you for starting this thread and help other understand Islam better.
I would like to pass on a book that i specifically like as it bring tolerance and peace in the Faith of Islam : "Moving the Mountain" from Imam Faisal
