I have a kind of death anxiety - I worry about the *way* in which I will die. Will I be alone? Will it be painful? etc

I understand fear, but since we do not know when we will die, why worry about it today?

fear of long time pain i understand too, but not the passing it self.

i dont mean to sound disresectful to those who fear it.

I'm simply afraid how I check out and what happens afterwards in the afterlife.

The fear of the unknown. What will happen to us? Some people fear that it will be painful or they will have a long illness before they die. Other people don't want to leave this existence or are afraid of leaving. People will have different experience when this happens to them.

I've heard it said by the pioneer Helen Wambach being born is painful; death is not. That resonates with me.

A lot of people don't believe there's an afterlife and really until we experience it for ourselves we don't know what to expect. It could be that there's just nothing and so death would be scary. If there is an afterlife then it could be a scary place to go.

I heard a quote once that said, "I'm not afraid to die, I just don't want to be there when it happens". That's the way I feel. I'm not afraid to die, but the process of dying is scary.

Probably people are afraid not of death itself, but of diseases that precede death.
