Can anyone solve this mystery?

Thank you all for your responses, I see a variety of possibilities from your replies.

To answer some of you, they weren't random dots , they were perfectly aligned as in the simplistic diagram I tried to make,
There was nothing in the bedding that could make that pattern becuase ive been punctured by needles before and they didn't leave that particular type of mark,
They were like micro wounds for when they put lemon juice on them they stung.
I have had bug bites of all sorts and they usually have swelling around the bite these had no swelling whatsoever....
I guess ip this is why it has left me bewildered all these years....

I am really sorry for my very unromantic suggestion...
But bed bugs bite in straight lines, and can sometimes make vague patterns with their bites. Perhaps not as many marks as you had on your face especially as they were symmetrical, but that's just a possibility. You were on holiday in a different place and who knows how many times that mattress had been used, and by whom, before you slept on it.

Please don't be sorry, my enquiery was put on here for this reason , to get thoughts and ideas..
it was my aunties house and only she and my grandmother lived there.
I'd like to hope it was just bugs, but there were no swellings just markings.
The one with three rows perfectly aligned and the dots perfectly spaced between each other baffled me most....
