Question Names define us?

Hi there!

Lately I've been really interested in the idea that our names hold power and that they can determine our potential. I have one little theory myself that I would love to share, but I want to know what others thought about it first. Do you think that something about our names adds to our ability of spiritual sustenance? Please, let me know what you think!

In Reiki, using the symbols involves drawing the symbol and invoke its name. This is to align the drawer of the symbol to a particular frequency.

I have felt this to be accurate; however...

I do not believe that the symbol or the word must be used to align to that frequency. I believe that these are tools of focus - and very good ones.

So I think that our names can hold power, if we imbue them with that power. But I also think that they don't -

- but the do or the don't of it, when it comes to our names, may or may not be conscious.

Just my thought, since you asked.

In my own mindscape studies, I have arrived at the conclusion that we possess names and unrealized names that encapsulate our entire expressive constitutions, owing from the fact that God was the original namer.

Numerology suggests that our names have a certain number and that number has meaning. That number may or may not be compatible with other numbers in our lives - e.g. our date of birth, our home address, the number of our partner's name. So changing our name can change our overall number for better or for worse.

A name is also a mantra, and every name has its own vibration. We may feel very comfortable with the name we have been given or we may feel that another name suits us better on a vibrational level.

It is traditional in some cultures to take on a new name when we embark on a spiritual path. For example, when Mukunda Lal Ghosh became a swami he chose the name Yogananda (Yoga + Ananda - bliss through Yoga). Such a change of name reflects that we have let go of our previous worldly identity and it also expresses something of our spiritual nature.

I obviously do not use my given name online, but in daily life I have never felt the need to change my name. It is simply a label, but it is not me.

Peace.

Maybe our given name is selected before incarnation as part of our life purpose. If you feel that you were born to this name then you are fortunate. Some people do not feel so comfortable with their parents choice, and they change their name to something which feels more like them.

The original meanings of names have perhaps become less relevant because they are often from another language. Eric has obvious associations with the Vikings, and a quick search shows that it means "always the ruler" (ei + rikr).

We could consider the nature of the word Eric. It is brief, with soft sounds but culminating in a hard c. Have you ever tried meditating on Eric as a mantra to see how it makes you feel?

Peace.

well I never wanted to believe in Numerology, but reading a book called Star Signs by Linda Goodman (who is also an Astrologer, I picked the book off a friend's shelf thinking it was about that) there was a chapter on Chaldean Numerology and I could not deny it after that. the book is so awesome, from some decades back so check it out if you're curious, it's about secret codes of the universe and has numerous interesting chapters. but also here is a numerology calculator online that follows what she did

I am sure there is more to a name and letters and sounds and all that though but the Chaldean Numerology I am rather certain is real whether I wanted to believe it or not

For my part, I have never liked my name. It doesn't resonate with me in the slightest. It was simply a popular girls' name the year I was born. Do I think my name has any sort of power? No, not at all.

However I feel that I also have a True Name, the name I would have liked to have, perhaps the name I chose before coming. It's similar to my given name, but both itterations of it that I like carry so much more power, and feel so much less limiting and "vague." It's almost like my parents NEARLY got the message and then got sort of muddled.

So they named me "Susan" which when you say it is sort of a slurred sound and not pretty at all.

I wanted either Suzanne or Sheshana (both variants of Susan). Suzanne is so much more open and Sheshana sounds exotic. So I guess my parents got the memo, but couldn't quite make out the handwriting lol.
