All kinds of reasons
I agree that sometimes they show themselves because they can, that is, if you can see them, they show themselves.
But I also think they are mostly just like us--they have all kinds of reasons for doing the things they do. There's no single motive.  |

How about this for a concept? That spirits do not show themselves to us, but occassionally WE reach a vibration where by WE can see spirits!
