Starhawk's not bad, but probably more sophisticated than the target demographic of Mama Silverwolf.

Dion Fortune is a pseudonym, but I think she published some pretty good stuff too.

I tend not to read a great deal of material of the genre. I stick to well-researched academic books coming out of British Universities, authors such as Prof Ronald Hutton "Triumph of the Moon" - not light reading to be sure but well worth the effort.

I don't use Banishing - I use the reverse as Closing.

I didn't post anything about Spirit because I thought it might get a little confusing, I dunno - maybe I should have.

The banishing descriptions I gave are the reverse of the Invoking pentagrams that are commonly used.

Albalida (love your name, by the way) I have to agree about Silver RavenWolf. I could never get through Starhawk but Penczak's pretty good. I read very few of those books any more, I'm like Norseman now, I read the more academic books.

When taking a bath I want to purify the water banishing all that is not meant to be there.

Do you know a good method?

The 'earth' is not banished the pentagram representing the element earth is invoked and banished.

Thriftyarek, it would be much easier to add some sea salt (not a lot) and that will cleanse any negative vibrations in the water, especially if you say some words as you add the salt to the bath water (such as - "With this sea salt I cleanse any negative vibrations from this water") and it would be cleansing for you too.

The banishing pentagram is usually only used when banishing an invoked pentagram.

I still prefer "closing" to " banishing"

THought you might be interested in this. At Christmas, I offered spiritual presents to those at the dinner. I used my own version of Calling the Quarters. Everyone joined in on the responses and seemed to appreciate it.

INVOKING THE ELEMENTALS
Beginning in the North position, place the card of the Lord of the Powers of Earth in position and declare the following :

Welcome Elementals of the North, of Earth.
I ask that you bring your gifts of Patience, Endurance, Stability, and Prosperity.
** Be welcome here !

Now move to the East position and the Lord of the Powers of Air :

Welcome Elementals of the East, of Air.
I ask that you bring your gifts of Wisdom, Intellect, Perception, and Inspiration.
** Be welcome here !

Now to the South, and the Lord of the Powers of Fire.

Welcome to the Elementals of the South, of Fire.
I ask that you bring your gifts of Passion, Strength, Energy, and Will Power.
** Be welcome here !

Now to the West, and the Lord of the Powers of Water.

Welcome to the Elementals of the West, of Water. I ask that you bring your gifts of Emotion, Pleasure, Fertility, and Receptivity.
** Be welcome here !

Finally to the Centre, and the Lady of Spirit, Mother Earth.

Welcome to the Elementals of the Centre, of the Spirit.
** Be Welcome here !
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Silently, make your request and relax.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Always dismiss the Elementals with gratitude, using the following words, beginning in the centre. Pick up the cards in reverse order.

Elementals of the Centre, of Spirit
Thank you for the gifts you have brought.
** Stay if you will ; go if you must.
** Hail and Farewell !

Follow in the order West/Water, South/Fire, East/Air, North/Earth
Thank each elemental in turn using the same form of words as used for Spirit.

There is a need to stress the part played by focus and intent on the gifts chosen for success to be achieved.

Everyone was given a copy of the framework to concentrate on
