The theory of how a Meteor, or rather one should probably cite "Meteors" did the major damage in annihilating the Dinsoaurs is come into question by a group of scientist, of late.
However? I don't think it will hold.

Whole towns and cities have been found, around the world, residing in giant meteor craters, which until recently had been hidden by the overgrowth of sediment and Flora. Now having been detected by satellite technology.



There is also the theory that Mars' atmosphere dissipated, having to do with a similar situation.
