I don't know much about meditating, but I do think it takes a quiet mind state to feel them. So if you have a place you go for solitude or activities which quiet all your thoughts... For me when I make things with my hands, that is when I feel their presence. Or when I'm reading poetry. Also when I go walking in the woods, which is what takes me into my "zone". When I was young I remember feeling someone with me anytime I sat on my bedroom floor to sew or paint. I didn't know what guides were then, just that someone was with me.
