Some schools of Buddhism have chanting as their only practice (Nichiren/Japanese pureland) are two types that immediately come to mind. They look at chanting as a form of meditation. I learned meditation from Thai Forrest monks tradition (theravada) it was a style that focuses on the breath and I still use it. Chinese pureland combines meditation and also chanting. One of the main types of meditation that is taught is a visualization method of visualizing the western pureland of Amitabha buddha. In Buddhism and meditation techniques there is no one size fits all and many people like myself like to mix and match techniques from a few traditions.
