It sounds as good as any way to start. And you seem to have done well. People meditate for different reasons - sometimes to deal with problems; getting an object to yield its secrets; to pathwork. There are different approaches and times of day when it works best, etc.
The point is, you seem to have discovered something about yourself. To me it sounds as if it bordered on trance which is when your consciousness will expand. If you become interested in trance, remember this session (which isn't to say it could be turned into deep trance but it's a starting point).
Don't expect it to be the same always. It might but you'll find other avenues. You can try to replicate what you've done so far and find it yields different insights, different scenes. May I suggest you keep a journal...doesn't have to be too elaborate. A chunk of your description here would do but you can expand on it if you feel inclined.
I'm never sure what "mindful" actually means in a spiritual context. It seems to be a mix of awareness (which many in the mundane world lack) and concentration. I may be waffling. It isn't something I've looked into. On that mundane world if someone told me to "be mindful" I'd take it they meant be aware of/take notice. So I suppose it's roughly the same.
So, all the best with it.
