In chi Kung you focus more on chi manipulation and strengthening. In tai chi you learn to used you chi in movements and forms. You connect you cord that runs along the spine to the heavens and into the earth. This centers your energy and creates balance. Balance is key in martial arts. You can channel that chi through arms, legs or whatever to generate more power in you movements then someone with no control over their own chi. The classic movie scene is when a master throws someone across the room with little movement by channeling his chi. You can practice moving the chi by doing the chi ball technique. The chi ball only exists if you are properly channeled. My Sifu (master) can tap into other peoples chi and knows where their chi is balanced and use it against them. So if someone comes at him, he simply brushes them off by reading their chi balance. Kind like he finds your weak spots and takes advantage of it and he does it just by looking at and feeling your chi

So yes tai chi would help in combat. Someone with chi control can take on a big giant with poor balance any day. ;)
