Wicca Book Recommendations

Hi all,

Lately, I've been on this whirlwind "regime" on learning about different world religions and it's been a set goal to read as many books as possible on different religions. I've been looking for a really good book on Wicca (the history, fundamentals of philosophy, practice, etc.). Basically, the type of book that gives a very good (yet, thorough) introduction to someone who knows absolutely nothing about paganism or wicca, but would like to learn more about it. I recently finished reading a great deal about Islam, so I feel like I'm ready to move on to another new and exciting religion!

Is there a particular book you like or would suggest to current avid reader?

(I should add as a side note, that I don't mind the possibility that I'll have to order a book online if you guys suggest a great find. I tried hitting up my local library, but all their books on Wicca or paganism are either 1) stolen; or, 2) long overdue, like from as far back as 2009.)

Thanks in advance!

This is a classic book on Wiccan history:
Ronald Hutton: The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft

Many books on Wiccan philosophy and practice teach grossly inaccurate ideas on Wiccan history - unintentionally. Before the 1990s, the Wiccan community was simply unaware of current historical research.

I have read only a few Wiccan books. Then I realized that Wicca isn't for me. I can't recommend any of them to you due to scholarship issues, among other things.

Wow, thanks! I definitely will look into that one. Do you consider it better to try to find books that discuss its history more from the modern approach, then?

I recommended a history book simply because you were also interested in Wiccan history. If you read serious book on Wiccan history, you'll later recognize when there is bad history in a Wiccan book. You can separate the wheat from the chaff and enjoy the good parts in that uneven book.

There are also Wiccan books with good scholarship. I just haven't personally read them, so I can't recommend them.

I'm in the same situation about the thirst for knowledge of the many religions and magical ideologies of this world. I don't have much strong knowledge on wicca but I'm extremely interested. I did have a wiccan friend named Suzan.
Her recommendation and main reference was "Book of Shadows". Another well revered witch suggested "The Spiral Dance" by Starhawk.

Please note that I have not read these books, I cannot give my feedback on them. They're just ones many wiccans I've witnessed suggest or brought up. I doubt everyone does though and there's many difference interesting titles I have yet to discover.

The Wicca Handbook by Eileen Holland,
Wicca for Beginners by Lisa Chamberlain,
and if you wanted some spells, Lisa Chamberlain has Wicca spell books!

Those are the books I'm reading right now. :)
