I think you need to follow what works best for you. If reading appeals to you right now and you are gaining something good from it, continue. If later you want to experience more than read, then do that.

I liked what Falling Leaves said: they never got much out of the place until they had a map to guide them.

You could spend a lifetime "discovering" countries for the first time and only have enough time to visit a few cities you didn't like. Or you could look at a map, read up on the ones that interest you most and explore those. You can even narrow down to the cities and villages.
