I get a kind of an Indiana Jones vibe from this story. There were a lot of nobles which spent a lot of time going exotic places in the hopes of discovering awesome stuff which they could then take credit for and show the folks back home.

Perhaps one such explorer went in there, found it to be lacking in spectacular finds, and left, forgetting his watch.

It's certainly mysterious.
