Triggers of a past life
I do believe in past lives but I am not sure if my "memories" of them are true.
To name an example: I often feel a strong sense of familiarity/ deja vu about some things that seem to point to a past life as a Native American. I have gotten this feeling when walking in the woods, near a dry river bed, on a hot day. I have gotten the trigger feeling when eating sweet potatoes, plantains, and smelling wild onions. Also, when I was a child I used to dig up roots and call them "soaproot". I had NO IDEA what soaproot was until I was an adult and googled it. I used to spend lots of time as a child whittling sticks into points, braiding pine straw into jewelry, and making "stews" out of berries and leaves. I know some of that is normal, but all together, it makes me feel like I had a life as a Californian Native American.
I've had very vivid dreams of playing around a stone structure on a hilly, rocky embankment, and traveling down into a underground room much like the ones in Edinburgh castle. I have recently discovered that some of my ancestors inhabited this castle.
In meditations I have seen other lives, mundane ones, and I am not sure whether to believe them, either.

Give it time. You might be tapping into a past life or you may not. Only you can answer these questions.
I have a saying, "If you believe it happened, it did."

If you're interested about your past lives, you'll get more reliable information through regressions, than from dreams, or spontaneous memories and feelings. And if you want to get the most untainted past lives information, you should regress through self-hypnosis, rather than with a hypnotherapist, who inherently will pass you some of their beliefs.

Sounds like past life recollections to me! Awesome description, really interesting, I enjoyed reading that. I too have had imaginations of a past life as an Aboriginal Native American.

My spiritual mentor advised against recalling past lives by asking the following question when people asked about how to recall past lives, "So .... you've already solved all the problems in this life?"
Having said that, my mentor's successor just ordered a book for me, "Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives", in which real case studies are examined as part of regressions. I expect to receive the book tomorrow, and am looking forward to reading it. While I am personally not into regressions, I suspect that there is something to be learned by reading this book on real case regressions.

Why do you feel the need for a spiritual mentor? As you noticed, they contradict each other. I believe that most of the mentors, as other people who express contradictory beliefs, are honest, but some of them are honestly mistaken. I think that directly tapping the source (as it happens through self hypnosis) is the cleanest path to knowledge.

I was told by a psychic that in my family history there was a history of persecution but she didn't go into detail except to say that this happened centuries ago and it happened when one of my ancestors was a teen. This person had a happy childhood and then a terrible war broke out and this person escaped but was left with nothing. Everything this person had was taken from them especially their sense of security.
Because of this happening, this is why I'm very sensitive to other's people's pain and it is difficult for me to see someone suffering. I've cried when I seen people suffer on the news.
