I think modern society needs a spirituality which is strong on social demands.

I've always thought of spirituality as ancient not modern. And I don't think society as a whole will ever embrace spirituality. Most of us here on this forum are a lone path of spirituality.

For me, at least, spirituality will always be an individual thing, not a group effort. It's between me and God/Universe/Creator or whatever you want to call the creating force.

I agree it's more of an individual thing..
Religion has its ''uses'' though. I just wished it didn't play such a fanatical role in politics..

And I would go even further than ''this forum'' and ''lone path''. Those who are truly serious about spirituality aren't even in society, but in monasteries meditating all day dedicating their lives to seeking enlightenment. Most of us here are ''just'' seekers. I think one of the main, and perhaps inconvenient, messages of spiritual teachings throughout history is that asceticism separates the seeker from the serious practitioner. I don't believe we can ''have it all''...

Lol, it's my opinion there are old souls, right in society. Your next door neighbor, your co-worker, your grocery store clerk. Quietly living their lives. I do agree they aren't big "doers" anymore in society. They just bring a little bit of light to those that cross their paths.

I quite agree with Honza. Eastern religions have a lot more focus on ''me'' as on ''us,'' although far from that obsession of ''I'' as is practiced in ''modern spirituality'' in the west. Nevertheless, eastern religions and philosophies did often run into problems and still do because of too much of ''I'' and lack of ''us.'' Also the misinterpretation of Karma can be often use as an excuse not help others, tolerance to suffering, exploitation,...Maybe it's ironic that I write this, because I follow an eastern goddess(Guan Yin), but there is often big misrepresentation and understanding of eastern philosophies or religions in the west. In the west is Buddhism presented as somekind of atheistic philosophy, where it goes everything about > me, myself and I<. While it's true that Theravada Buddhism is usually focus more about own power to ''enlightenment'' they are big minority in the east, the biggest branch of buddhism in the east Mahayana Buddhism which already includes as Christianity various deities, the importance of helping others, equality,..let alone to speak from Pure Land Buddhism, which sounds almost the same as Christianity,..

Also Hinduism is in the west usually deeply misrepresented or scrubbed down to chakras & physical yoga and that's it. I don't really agree that eastern religions are the couse of western rise of self obssesion. I think this was a process of decates of promoting certain self-centred economic philosophies, the rise of atheism,.. The ''self centered spirituality'' is somehow a logical consequence or outcome of western self centered development. I think that western philosophy and religion have alot to offer, the only reason why I have run to an ''eastern goddess'' was because I could not find any other deities which was not somehow linked to violence,..even though I don't think that western philosophy, looked to Old Greeks, Plato, Socrates,...is inferior to eastern philosophies,..It is strange development of the western spirituality that it looks to the east for salvation, probably because the Catholic Church have deeply disappointed people with various scandals, insisting on various dogmas,...at least this is often the key reason why people turn to the east.

People turn to the ''east'' because there's more room for a spirituality catered to the individual, whereas ''western'' ''spirituality'' is more about community. The east values spiritual practices, whereas the west values salvation through belief. I say west, but this broadly Abrahamic monotheism. Belief to them is very much the central point, whereas in the eastern religions it is less so.. and relativist attitudes towards the gods are more common. Eastern religion is so diverse one could turn almost any way possible, and that's why it is more successful in today's modern world I believe. I'm very glad that it is getting more popular, because eastern religion feels far more real, useful, and also has more potential to treat all living beings with respect..

It's not just some years of highlighted abuse cases that put people off the churches and popular religion. It's centuries upon centuries of fear and dominance..
And I don't believe its Protestant sects have done much better. On the contrary I find those sects, such as evangelicals, far more worrying than traditionalists.

It's my opinion Christianity has been molded by the forefathers of the 'church' to fit their needs rather than to teach the original master(s).
