Arguing with an Atheist
I recently started talking to this person who happens to be an Atheist.
and they constantly try and convince me that my philosophy is silly.
I felt the prospective of this persons views and its sensible to see how someone who only sticks to the logical side of their brain can dismiss the existence of God
I myself am a theist....
Is my involvment with this person toxic to my personal developement?

You should look at why you feel the need to argue.....that would be the toxic part to your development.

This has nothing to do with being an atheist or not, this has to do with the person - and you as a person. What is probably more 'toxic' to your personal development is your use of the word 'toxic' and this 'atheist vs theist' labelling, frankly. Did you know that atheists do God's work as much as theists do?
While he's dismissing the existence of God what are you using to argue against that? Are you using your logic to argue that there is a God, or are you really arguing your own doctrines and agenda?
There is such a thing as dichotomy, because beyonnd your won definitions there is one here.

No, this person is not toxic to your personal or spiritual development.
If anything, he/she may be helping you, by leading you to see both sides of the issue and to solidify your thinking about your beliefs. It's easy to say "I believe in God" if that is how you've come to feel about the question.
It's much harder to lay out your reasoning for believing in God. Much more work to truly consider what evidence or experiences lead you to the conclusion that God exists.
You are extremely unlikely to ever convince your friend to renounce atheism, but you may learn just how deep your belief truly is. You may also formulate the rationale and words to use if another person asks a question about God's existence.
If you find it difficult to defend or explain your belief in God's existence, then clearly this is a life lesson for you. You feel a need to defend your belief, but don't know how. This is the time to sort it out in your mind and learn how to rebut his logic with logic of your own.

Sounds like there is more going on than just an argument about being atheist or theist. Is there something you DO (not just believe) that the person disagrees with?
I can understand when people argue about the actions related to beliefs. For instance, I am opposed to things like animal slaughter and circumcision for religious reasons., and would argue against these things. But if someone believes they're going to heaven and I'm going to hell, or that I'm being silly for believe in a spirit world, I don't see what good would do to argue about it.
