Stray Kitten?

This summer I have heard a cat meowing late at night a few times... I dont always hear whats outside because I have my AC on... but I have gone out to look for a cat and can never find one.

My neighbour told me he always hears my cats crying at night. I told him my cats dont cry at night. I would know, as I am home with them. So I am wondering if this is the same cat I have heard.

Today I was going to work and saw a small 5-7 month old kitten chasing a bug just outside my neighbours backdoor. It didn't have a collar and I had never seen it before. I asked one of my neighbours if they had a cat and they said no. I will ask my other neighbour when they get home.

But if this is the meowing cat we have been hearing, any tips to try to catch him? I'm going to leave some food and water outside for it and am hoping I see it again.

That's very kind of you to be thinking about it. I think that I would do the same ~ make sure that it's not hungry and thirsty. If it is then I would slowly try to get a little bit closer. Perhaps move the bowls a little closer etc...

You can contact your local SPCA for loaner trap. I did years ago. I used to feed a feral cat in our yard. Because I had indoor/outdoor cats, I had to capture it so it would get vaccinated and not spread disease to my cats.

I haven't seen the kitten again but I put food and water out. The food is all gone, so I might put some more but there are lots of skunks, racoons, birds and even possums and squirrels in my neighbourhood.

My neighbour said he will let me know if he hears meowing. If I see the little guy again I will call the spca and see about getting a trap.

Skunks love kitty kibbles. No point getting the trap unless the kitten is back for good.

Kittens have a high pitch squeak they don't meow like an adult cat does. Are you sure that it isn't cats arguing with each other? That is a similar sound to meowing but it becomes like a droning sound. Cats have a patrol route & often clash if they are doing so at the same time of night.

A single kitten on it's own is a little odd - usually there is a litter so it could actually belong to someone that has just let it out (some people do that).

Also a cat doesn't need a collar if it is microchipped & lots of collars are snap release so that they don't hang themselves.

This doesn't necessarily apply to you but cats often have an owner then about 3 other people who feed them (thinking that they are strays). Once this habit forms the cat will become a pest & food obsessed.

Obviously keep your eyes on it's health but people are inclined to worry about cats a little too much at times.

There are more cats out there that are hungry than people can ever imagine. I recently saw a cat outside my house, no doubt a stray eating the bread I put out for the birds, unfortunately the ants got if first so it was covered in ants. But the cat was eating the bread crumbs ants and all. She was pretty skinny. I swore I wouldn't feed anymore of the cats that show up around my house, because the cat I have now, who was a stray herself, and gets extremely territorial and starts to get upset when other cats are around (the smell and sight of other cats makes her start growling and she gets tense, then she starts getting aggressive)-but how could I watch this obviously hungry cat swallow these bread crumbs for food? So I fed her. She ate everything I put down and has since been back for more. I don't know what to do, but there are other cats - not just her. The years I've lived here it is ongoing the stray, hungry cats here. They need medical attention too. I've continuously put out my own money because I can't watch a cat limp around injured or starving-the cat we have now was 5 lbs when we found her (she's now over 10 lbs).

Its possible those kittens lost their mother. It happens more often than we'd like to think about-and that was the cause of their meowing. Meowing kittens means they are calling for their mother. If they are calling and calling, mother may have not been able to return, and they were hungry. They may have been old enough to survive on their own or just on the brink of and that kitten may have been the only survivor. It is hard to tell what happened there, or if this cat has anything to do with those kittens at all. I would not assume that it is being fed, though it is a good point that it could be one of your neighbors which is what I'd find out first. I'd knock on doors in your surrounding area first. If no one knows anything about the kitten than its pretty safe to assume that its a stray.

I wish humans hadn't domesticated cats.

Cats are natural wanderers & despite what people will say are not actually very loyal. They always have multiple people feeding them.

There are strays sure but weight & condition are the indicator as to whether a cat is a stray or just a "playa".

The pitch of a cats meow has evolved to emulate an infants cries which I think is very creepy myself. Cats have all the tools to hunt & survive but they mooch instead.

I have cats/ have had cats but I don't for one second think that they belong as domesticated creatures much like parrots or reptiles.

Cats are supposed to live in colonies.

I had a stray kitten once like this. Was a red tabby looking thing, kinda looked like a miniature lion. He came every night because I put food and milk out, and I eventually ended up catching him easily.
He walked straight in my door!

Then he stayed for years and years until his natural death. There was no more tom-cattin round for him, cos he was 2 stone lighter pretty quick after he'd let himself into my house.

Turned out to be a beautiful cat, and massive big lump of a thing.
