The nature of addiction is to use whatever means at one's disposal to activate the reward/pleasure centre within the brain...and people will stay addicted until such times as something "better" comes along to replace it, or if the addiction itself fails to provide the desirable effect.

For all intents and purposes, I have clinical depression...I could say, however, that my pleasure/reward centre in my brain has totally ceased functioning, because nothing gives me any pleasure or reward, despite trying to find anything that does...or maybe I start off by saying "I don't think I am going to like this" and therefore never give it a chance...and years of CBT has not corrected this.

The only thing I am really addicted to is sleeping, because when I am fast asleep, I am able to let go and not get involved in anything or not care. This does not invoke any pleasure response in my brain, however...and the debate rages as to whether it is a chemical imbalance, or whether my atypical brain is simply wired that way.

The mind and consciousness itself, the spirit must have autonomy over the chemical pathways of the flesh ? Hope that is not too crudely put as I don't wish to undermine chemical understandings of addiction and valuable insights and help they give to people. But say for example within the 12 step programme of AA or NA you have a prevalent concept which says that the addict was 'restored to sanity', the insanity in the addict's case being the continuation of using a substance with the expectation of a different result, therefore, happiness in this case. So the addict uses his or her substance again hoping for a different result which never transpires. Addicts who were chronically addicted have recovered not through chemical intervention from the medical community but by psychological and spiritual insights into their own situations, hence why I suggest that the spirit reigns supreme over the flesh. Perhaps this is a too simplistic way of seeing ? But i haven't had the access in my life to study cases when chemical intervention is arguably the only route to break an addiction ? Just my two pence worth of an observation. :)

Hello all.

Suggesting--not stating--, that addiction may perhaps be likened to some kind of feed back loop. A situation arises for some--and varied-- reason, (depending perhaps upon the characteristics of the individual/s concerned and circumstances)--a "cure" is sought but the nature of the cure becomes itself a "problem". The result is cause seems to become consequence becomes cause becomes consequence becomes----.

If this is sthg like the mechanism functioning then perhaps a way to break out of the loop may involve a better understanding--especially a better self understanding--of the individual characteristics and circumstances which gives/gave rise to the initial situation becoming an issue of some magnitude, and then using that understanding to formulate a means whereby the individual/s concerned may--with whatever help and support is necessary--then be able to pursue that means as a self chosen way fwd. This begins to sound familiar in that it seems to be along the lines followed by established support affiliations working in this "field".

The above simply and only suggests a possible way of understanding sthg of the mechanism of addiction, and may very probably be already well understood as mentioned. An understanding which of itself is not a solution however, and I think no one here underestimates the complexity of the issue, the distress which it causes to all involved--and beyond--and the openness of mind and thought which will be/is required if solutions are to be found which do not become in their turn future and further problems.
