HR Ellis Davidson would be my choice -- academic, neutral, readable, reliable. Neither romanticized nor cynical. And great fun, with real flavour.

I second that! I haven't read that particular book of hers, but it's next on my book list. Her Gods and Myths of Northern Europe is a fantastic book http://www.amazon.com/Myths-Northern...ref=pd_sim_b_1
She really knew her stuff.

And Rudolf Simek is a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to Germanic myth. Although most of his books are in German. His stuff delves deeply into linguistics as well, if that's something you like.
