Religion and spirituality are most assuredly not the same thing, as you duly noted.

WIkipedia: Modern scholars such as Tom Harpur and Joseph Campbell favor the derivation from ligo "bind, connect", probably from a prefixed re-ligare, i.e. re- (again) + ligare or "to reconnect,"

I define the ultimate religion as the process of "re-connecting" with Original Nature, which is spirituality. However, it is not uncommon for religions to fall far short of the mark. That is why, in my initial post, I equated spirituality with the "perfection of religion" in which one re-connects with Original Nature.

We are essentially in agreement.

It should be a meeting of souls. Beauty, wealth, lineage - these are decidedly 'earthly', unspiritual things.

It does not necessarily negate the other three but definitely transcends wealth and lineage since those most assuredly pass away. Since "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", the quest for "beauty" can be interpreted on many levels (not just physical beauty) and can easily include love.
