Why not watch that river go by too.............without adding water to it.

If you are adding water to it... it is because you want it to be different...

What insight did you gain?

Of course imagining wonderful scenarios improves your mood, but does it give you insight?

If you want to see it 'as it is'... it's like watching a river flow by. You don't add water to make the river deeper, you don't imagine it sounds some other way, you do not do anything at all. You sit on the bank and simply enjoy what is there.

Let me put it another way.
Ok, I’m here sitting on that river bank watching the river go by. I’m enjoying it……no insight though.
Wait here comes some insight………”just watch life go by and enjoy it”
Did I “imagine” that story? Did I make it up?
What possible insight could there be in just watching life go by and enjoying it?
How do you differentiate between what you see as “imagining wonderful scenarios to improve your mood” and true insights (whatever that might mean)?

I’m not following you. Care to explain further?

'just watching life go by and enjoying it?'

Does anyone 'just enjoy'?

Life does go by, but no one 'just enjoys' it. Sometimes there is enjoyment.

Who says no one 'just enjoys it'?

Perhaps people 'just don't feel the need to broadcast their enjoyment to everyone'.

The again, maybe that's not entirely the case either...

In my view the capacity for enjoying is built-in.

We may discover we can enjoy just being

without waiting for something enjoyable to float by on the river.

I hear you. Whenever I set out to sit by the river to enjoy it, it always seems so artificial.
Don't get me wrong, i enjoy sitting by the river but there is this other 'more real to me' enjoyment that comes with just being.

Yes... the 'more real' enjoyment is built-in.

Of course, the river of life is always flowing. Maybe that's the one Gem means.

Someone can move their attention, but that is NOT the only power.

I can put attention on my breath, then I can change the breath. I can stop the breath.

I can put attention on the sunrize but I can not change it. The sun will rize.

You can change the river and make a dam to stop it or change its course.

Insight is to see what is, not to change it.
