Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Namaste, my friends.

Literally meaning 'Death - Conquering Mantra' there have been quite a few instances during intense Sadhana and meditation, where the soul gets lost and the ego allows it to drift along aimlessly on the tides of life.

This Mantra should be called '(Fear of) Death conquering Mantra' because chanted at the time of Death, it takes one directly to the abode of Shiva - I had to find that out the hard way:

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a supplication to Lord Shiva in His form as 'Tryambakam" or the 'Third-Eyed' Lord and it's a Mantra in direct reference to the mystic powers, wisdom and insight of the Divine in relation to mortality.

At death, our consciousness turns inwards at the brow, so using this reference to Shiva in this form reminds us of it.

The rest of the Mantra refers to Lord Shiva being the 'cosmic gardener' and taking gourds off the vine when they are ripe...but only when they are ripe.

Shiva separates the soul from Maya as the fruit of the curcurbit species is separated from the creeper..

It refers to Lord Shiva as the 'reaper of Souls' in that eventually, all goes back to the Source...back to Shiva - it just takes many lifetimes sometimes, but chanting this Mantra and remembering it shortens the time.

So, I hope you enjoyed my commentary about this, my favourite Mantra, good for 'whatever ails you':...it has helped me SO much.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे
सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्
मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

Om Try-Ambakam Yajaamahe
Sugandhim Pusstti-Vardhanam
Urvaarukam-Iva Bandhanaan
Mrtyor-Mukssiiya Maa-[A]mrtaat ||

Meaning:
1: Om, We Worship the Three-Eyed One (Lord Shiva),
2: Who is Fragrant (Spiritual Essence) and Who Nourishes all beings.
3: May He severe our Bondage of Samsara (Worldly Life), like a Cucumber (severed from the bondage of its Creeper), ...
4: ... and thus Liberate us from the Fear of Death, by making us realize that we are never separated from our Immortal Nature.

Aum Namah Shivaya
