Not all dreams of loved ones who have passed (in my experience at least) are 'visitation' dreams.
There are many differences between a pure 'visitation' dream, one that is mixed content, and one that is a mind-construct. It is very hard to give guidelines to someone else about how to differentiate between the nuances of those dreams. But to cut a very long story as short as possible, when it's a pure visitation, you usually wake up immediately after, tremendously moved as if you have been right there with them. The essence of their character is clear and very very real. (Not just the way they look but the 'feeling' of them.) And those dreams are unforgettable, and probably will be remembered all your life.

I'm pretty sure I've only experienced the mind-construct type of dreams... The dreams are really random and not clear, and there is a sense of the (deceased) individuals being part of the dream content, but no direct & meaningful interaction transpiring (that I can remember)...
It would be nice to experience a pure visitation dream...

Yeah but.....sometimes a dream can have a spark of something in it which is worth taking a look at...and mind has just woven patterns around that, so the memory is all mixed up. Dreams are weird, let's face it. They are all sorts of nuances and shades. Sometimes depending on how 'conscious' we are in a dream, there can be some clarity remembered and sometimes elements of our own mind get woven in as well, so the clarity goes when we wake up.
I usually go by the way a dream 'feels', and not take the content always literally. Sometimes I've woken up with a mish-mash dream with a loved one in it...thought "Oh that can't really be a 'contact' dream", but can't shake the feeling of their presence all day or for hours. So wonder if they were somehow 'around' me but my mind was just too sleepy!

Desire dreams are very common. You wish your dad would come back and hence then probably dreaming this. We often dream about things we are thinking about or wishing

We don't mention this to the outside, as they all know him to be gone now and we figure they wouldn't understand it.

You keeping this secret from others in your dream may be cause on some level you do know this is a dream (your subconsciousness knows this) and your father probably isnt really coming back so you know this isnt really right, you know this wouldnt hence be understood.
