I have to lie down with two huge pillows to prop me up because I have a problem with my neck. If I was sat upright in a chair and fell asleep it could be a bit dangerous and I could hurt myself. Problem with this is that sometimes I do fall asleep.

anyway, remember to use a cushion / zafu when meditating, I found out about this many years later and finally the back pain is gone.

I suppose most would prefer to sit in padmasana or some variation of it, but it is ok to sit anyway you can. Sometimes people may lack the flexibility to sit in a particular way. Using a cushion is fine if you feel you need it. The practice is more important then sitting a certain way. As long as you feel comfortable, you should be alright. Be sure to keep your back straight though.

I prefer to lay down in savasana. When I sit I get sleep in my legs after 40 minutes or so..
