A newborn starting over

Years ago I read nearly everything by Joseph Campbell and had some ongoing past-life experiences that I neither accept nor dismiss. I live in Thailand now and feel a draw to Buddha but don’t feel Thai Buddhism is my path. Right now I feel I have to let my path find me. Right now I feel like a newborn starting over.

BeboNow, that opening post was inspiring as hell. You seem very self-assured and confident. You said you read about Joseph Campbell: which one is he again? I recognize the name but can't place what his work is/was.

I was standing on the bridge, staring at the water, and you passed and said 'Good morning'."

Hi Crystal, thanks for the kind words.
Joseph Campbell spent his career as a professor of comparative religion at Sarah Lawrence.
His first book was "Hero with a Thousand Faces," hugely successful and inspiration for George Lucas doing Star Wars.
He did an incredible six-part series with Bill Moyers on PBS called "The Power of Myth."
He wrote a four-book set called "The Masks of God" and many, many other books, both informative and inspiring.
A very prolific guy

Oh, I've of the first book and that it's good, I'll pick it up. Didn't know it was what inspired Star Wars. What was it that really stood out to you about things he said?

Your question got me thinking, but I want to answer it a little differently than you asked it. Here are probably the two biggest take-aways I got from his writings:

One is the universality of it all. Mythology, lore, religion, the distinction the names conjure up is much greater than the difference in the realities of what they are. Another way of saying it is he brought home to me the universality of the human voice. The messages are all pretty much the same, just with different spins. This is actually the theme of “Hero with a Thousand Faces.” The hero is universal regardless of the face he wears.

The second thing is the incredible value and variety in the way spiritual beliefs serve humanity. Even of none of it is true, even if it’s all human construct, the value in believing it is enormous and broad, and he made me understand that.

The downside is that it took me a while to understand that while he sees the value of believing, his depth of knowledge kept him from believing in it as anything but metaphor. This is my struggle now.

If you’re interested, I just posted a lengthy post called “My Take on Truth, Science, and Spirituality.” It’s under Spirituality & Beliefs > Science & Spirituality. I’m still too new so they won’t let me give you the whole URL, but it’s this after the site URL: vb/showthread.php?t=122348

And your username suggests a focus I’m not usually attentive to. What posts of yours would tell me more about your perspective on the “out of bounds?” Going there is why I'm here.

Thanks again for your interest.
