The Bird
When the bird stands above its peers, it demonstrates its brilliance, its intellectual luster shining forth in marvelous clarity. He surmises he is better than the other birds, on account of his brilliance. Is he not quite right? After all, he has proven his intellectual prowess in myriad ways, and also his unrivaled compassion. The other birds think of him as an eccentric fellow, one whom cares not for the ways of the world, but instead seeks absolution in more private endeavors. He hides his face from the rest of the world, afraid of judgment. He keeps his thoughts and feelings to himself, lest they should be wrested from him and placed in the hands of the undeserving. He is motivated by a simple kind of idealism, thinking all should be fair and balanced. Try as he might to ignore his own nature, the bird finds himself pitted in a constant warfare between his lower and higher self, unable to decide which path he prefers. The spiritual, and the materialistic.......which branch should the bird fly hither? He ponders. He is certain of himself, yet such disparate branches should yield very different fruit. He knows spirituality is his proper calling, but considers it too complex. Materialism is safe, reassuring.......and somehow less satisfying. The bird glares into the distance. A cold, empty void meets his gaze. He adjusts his eyes, bringing a gnarled tree into focus. The branches of the tree are brittle, snapping and cracking under the influence of fresh snow. The bird readies himself for flight, stretching his wings. He leaps into the air, daring to reach the gnarled tree. He scans the tree for steady branches. He lands, relieved. The other birds call out to him, he answers with a proud caw. An idea springs forth in his mind.......materialism. That's the answer. It's the safe choice. Suddenly he notices two heavy branches within flying distance. He is certain of which branch he will choose. He leaps into the air once more, coming to a safe landing on the branch of materialism. The branch of spirituality hangs nearby, its alluring glow pleasant, but the bird is indifferent, his mind having been made up. The bird is content with his decision.

Perhaps there may come a day when the little bird no longer needs to feel torn between the the duality and ideas of spirituality and materialism. No longer needing to rest or linger on either branch, the bird flies free into the vast infinite wonder beyond anything it can possibly conceptualize or imagine.

No offense but, that sounds really boring.

None taken. And you are absolutely right in your assessment! A place where there is no extremism and no cacophony of wild pervasive thoughts and emotions is incredibly boring to most people. :)

A bird in flight rests its feet as gravity determines it's duration.
Efficient creatures for travel and thinking.
Birds are also very smart!
That has been a proven reality.
Nonduality gets under my wings too.
