Santa clause

When I was a kid my brothers and I grew up on a small farm. We had many different animals, horses, sheep, cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, etc. The space was so rewarding. We were fortunate enough to grow up there and enjoy its freedom it offered us. My gran would often talk about Santa Clause and how he would check up on us to see if we were being naught or nice.

One particular day, I remember it well I was 4 years old, my one brother and I were in the car with my gran. We were on our way to the local shop in our area. My brother, who was 2 years old at the time, asked my gran if we could get candy there. My gran replied, "Well that depends boys, have you been naughty or have you been on your best behaviour?" My brother eager for the candy replied, "Only our best gran!" With the result that we each selected two pieces of candy and ate them on our way home.

About a week later, I had awoken in the middle of the evening from a big man standing at the foot of my bed with a long white beard and a large tummy. My eyes grew bigger and bigger as I began to realise that my gran really wasn't talking bollocks about Santa coming to visit us. I was super excited because it was July and Christmas had come real early!!

During the weeks ahead I grew impatiently fond of the man (I called Santa) coming to visit me. We would talk about the toys I was playing with and he would ask me how my gran was and I was tell her that he loves and watches her everyday. I remember thinking that my gran must be important because adults aren't suppose to be on santa's list.

A few evenings later we were sitting around the dinner table, my mom dished our plate for us, my dad said grace and my gran began to talk about her day to my folks. My gran accidently said a mild swear word to which my brother covered his mouth in shock and I replied, "Well now you've done it, Santa's been watching you and you're sure off his list! But don't worry gran he watches you a lot and when he comes to see me again I'll put in a good word for you!"

Needless to say years later my gran told me I was talking to my granddad back then!

Today she often comes to visit me in spirit

Do you have any thoughts on why he chose you to speak to instead of speaking directly to your gran?

Hi Nomad Girl,

I think because my gran was Catholic, she was always wary and affraid of these kind of experiences. He knew I would be more accepting of this than I think she would have been.
