Considering the convict past of our country and especially Tasmania I don't think that this is unusual at all. The vast majority of the convicts were Irish Catholic and had always mixed their catholicism up with the celtic pagan religion of their ancestors and yes the Irish back then and still today are known the world over as magnificent horsemen especially in thoroughbred/racing circles.
