It might be helpful to find a bit more flexibility in meditation... Perhaps reserve some of your meditative sittings for the 'nothingness' and others for exploration. Just my own experience here, but I couldn't possibly explore and remain in the 'nothingness' state at the same time. Exploration can bring loads of new awareness, answers to questions, etc; attempts to stay where I am only limit those experiences.

If you are exploring or caught up in vision you are not meditating. You are lost in the mind in the vision or the exploring.

Instead when you are meditating and find yourself in such a state. Stop and gently go back to your practice.

Explore later.

Don't try, don't want for any "thing" be it a state of being or an experience. That wanting is what will hold you back.

Just do your practice and you will find yourself in that nothingness and then move beyond.

How do you feel after these experiences?

Do you seem to have burst of energy, after these meditation surges?

I do tend to get images and colours before the 'nothingness' phase which was my norm until I got these whilst deep in the 'nothingness' phase. Getting anything in the 'nothingness' is definitely not my norm. Perhaps I'm getting close to another phase after 'nothingness.' I tend to get most answers to questions through my dreams.

That beyond is where I'd like to go so hopefully I'm getting closer.

Not really! I have energy surges frequently at the moment but there's no burst of energy after meditating as such.

Could be the info you get through meditation is not available through the dream cycle. Not necessarily answers to questions so much as info that will take you forward in other ways. That your recent experiences are outside your norm seems to me to indicate that something - possibly important - is trying to come through, something you're not getting through your dreams.

Of course my comments are based on my own experience and yours may be very different. Just thought I'd throw that out there for your consideration.

This makes a lot of sense to me. And, your comments and experiences are important so keep throwing them out there. I find myself looking at things in a different way that I may not have thought to before, it's all very helpful

Meditation varies from one individual to the next. One cannot reasonably define meditation or demand adherence to one's own set of rules by another.
