I thought of something else that can help a lot.

Know that you're innocent (guilty of nothing) and worthy.

Some people believe that guilt and shame help us to behave. They think that if we feel guilty, we won't do bad things.

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!

On the contrary, people who feel guilt and shame are often unkind and in some cases violent. And the more ashamed they feel, the worse they behave.

On the other hand, people who feel good about themselves, people who 'know their worth', are usually very kind and loving.

No one is guilty, and everyone is worthy.

Many suggestions so far - all will help. For once I agree with most of Raziel's comments up there: expose yourself to the less salubrious side of life. As he says, do charity work (rather than just plonk money in collection boxes).

Allow people to be themselves where they and you can.

Several books have been suggested but (in no way being condescending or sarcastic at all) one of the best is the old classic: Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People."
See if you can find or borrow a copy. It'll be a lot more to the point than most of the populist spirituality books you see recommended on this site.

I sometimes give loose change to homeless people rather than big NGOs with dozens of staff on salaries I'd envy were I normal!
It was one of those things that confirmed my soulmate. We were walking in a less desirable part of town and she put a couple of coins in this guy's tin. He wasn't one of these aggressive beggars, just a homeless person who slept in shop doorways.
I said, "Oh come on, he'll spend it on drugs."
She said, "So what? It's his life."
And it was like a light suddenly came on in my head!
