I have black tourmaline crystals, pendant and a bracelet. It is an excellent crystal to have.

I picked up a large black tourmaline (raw one) a few weeks ago. It's a lovely big chunk and it stood out on the display. I nabbed it before someone else did!

Having been an owner of this type of crystal for quite some time I thought I'd give y'all my two cents.
The energy it carries(and what it brings to your own energy) is slow, heavy(but not encumbering), calming and cool. It lets you live in your own little bubble for a while, leaving you not too concerned about the rest of the world. Makes you feel you have all time in the world, which is not too far from the truth as it may reduce aging by keeping the telomeres intact. Helpful for slowing down a racing mind or one that might be too tangled with the business of others.
Good quantity for trying out would be 20-60g and I would recommend combining it with a piece of steel maybe 1/2 of the weight of the crystal.
