what language is spoken in Israel?

Is it Hebrew? Are there several languages spoken there, and if so which is the official one?

Hebrew is the main official language here. Arabic is also kind of official but not really. There are so many different languages spoken freely in Israel, however, and no matter what you speak you can easily find a community to communicate with.

What Yamah forgot to mention is that liturgical Hebrew we read in prayer books and the Torah is quite different than the Hebrew spoken in Israel due to modern inclusion of a lot of Yiddish along with some Arabic and English.

yeah and the grammar rules are a bit different too... it's technically called 'Modern Hebrew' as opposed to 'Biblical Hebrew'... They're close enough though that knowing one will basically let you understand the other.

And if you want to be specific Zechariah, it's inclusions of hebricised latin words like 'Televizia' and 'Symptomim'. Not really that much Yiddish goes into modern hebrew either... well, depending on who you're talking to I guess - if you're in a Yeshiva then you'll hear 'Yeshivish'....

Hebrew, like all languages, as evolved. Even the later written portions of the Tanakh have differences with those portions written at an earlier time. Mishnaic Hebrew has differences from biblical Hebrew and modern Hebrew has differences from both. That dynamism is to be expected.

Well there are people here who read Hebrew, but nobody can read it if they can't see it.
