Why do you want to meditate?

If you simply want to be more calm and relaxed then there are many types of meditation which can help (eg meditation on the breath or a mantra).

If you want to develop your chakras then you would use a meditation system which focuses on your chakras.

If you want to develop the power of your mind then there are other types of meditation which might be more appropriate (eg visualisation exercises).

If you want to meditate for greater spiritual awareness then you have a wide range of choices. So what resonates with you? Western mysticism, the various yogic traditions, the various Buddhist traditions, Sufism, Taoism, or any other independent teachers? These are not necessarily mutually exclusive, and there may be some overlap in ideas and practice.

So perhaps you can start by becoming clear about what you want and why. That might help you to identify a meditation practice which resonates with you.

Peace.

There's no shortage of resources on meditation.

The trick is finding ones that have it all: concise, consolidated, factual, rooted in experience, without adding to our bondage but removing if and guiding us on the right path.

quitefox, the best book on meditation is the one that is inside of you;
that is the greatest meditation resource. Preferably, in the beginning when
we are first learning how to meditate it is most helpful to have an experienced
meditation teacher. Someone you can talk to and will guide you in your meditation practice.

But once you form that deep connection within your self and external meditation
teacher is not necessary anymore because your focus will shift from the outside
to the inside, and you will find a most venerable teacher within your self that will
guide you deeper and deeper, if you learn how to listen within. This is the resource
that I referred to above.

Most of all do not let your head rob you of the experience that is within your heart.
Books are fine but they just point to a potential experience, and we should not get
too much expectation from reading books or even listening to others. It is a very
personal and intimate journey. Have no expectations, as expectations will hinder
your actual meditation experience. Live in the moment, not the past or future,
and keep your mind out of your meditation practice as much as possible.

Peace and Good Journey.
