Hi dream jo,

Incenses have magical powers of attraction or repulsion. I have a thurible (like they have in churches to burn incense but I don't use it now, instead using oil in a little burner. Some incenses/oils really help relaxation and some help brighten one's spirit (in the sense of enlivening and bringing optimism). A few drops of lemon oil in the bath works wonders.
I stopped using incense because my favourite incense maker retired (Sorcerer's Apprentice shop in Leeds) now offering very limited wares and a mix of exceptionally good magical books and charlatan stuff. My local esoteric shop sells incenses and charcoal but they aren't a patch on the SA ones)
The planetary incenses are pretty standard though.

Before I go beddi-bies, just to say that if you wanted to scent our home oils are best. Incense is so smoky! There's a section on aromatherapy here where you'll find some information on what oil to use for what (like music, I choose it to change or maintain my mood). Rose oil is very beautiful but horribly expensive but it can be bought in 10% concentration, much more affordable. Geranium oil also is lovely. And organic lavender is most pleasant. To bring sun into your meditations, Frankinsense oil.

Using incense sticks at a funeral is a wonderful connection with the spirit world.
