In the Thai forrest tradition the first 5 are for all lay followers at all times, the first 8 can also be adhered to by lay followers but usually on particular days like full moon, new moon, vesak, etc. The first 10 are for beginner/trainee monks/nuns.

Yes it seems that different traditions have different precepts regarding precepts

Still wondering why some call them Command.... ments.

Thanks Gem I had read a similar article on 'Patimokkha ' which contained it's complete descriptions.
Gosh so many rules and regulations, some of them seem really overboard and would be irrelevant today. Not all traditions follow all of them so I presume they are considered outdated nowadays.

Yes, morality degenerates into obedience and then it's just a bunch of rules.

I understood the basic 8 rules of sila help with the meditation in the ashram setting where meditation is all one does, sitting 10 hours, and mindful of every movement of walking, eating, washing etc, but if the deeper implications of how morality underpins proper practice isn't understood then there is no good conduct, just mindless obedience.

For a new novice who doesn't understand the nuance of the practice, a simple minded obedience is good to start off, and the first 5 are pretty much understood by everyone anyway. As the practice proceeds, adding the food sila, bed sila, and music/dancing/entertainment are understood in the meditation context.

As for bowls, robes and all the other petty rules, they are not even morally relevant.

Have never heard of Buddhist precepts being called commandments and doubt it's the norm by any means.
