Brain research is moving along at a pretty stiff pace. I'm amazed by what has been coming out of the labs this last decade, feeling both hopeful and a little concerned as they progress.
When mystics start cracking the inner code of how they inter-phase with the body and the energies that surround them, there is usually a batch of ideals that come along with this pursuit. Science will explore things for the sake of understandings and will likely at some point understand the raw mechanisms that the mystics consider normal. Should this be the case then essentially anyone will have access to such mechanisms, but they will likely do so with an undisciplined mind. Just imagine the conundrums from that one!
We may enter a period where we will be wishing for times past, when this all was still the purview of the lone mystic applying his knowings.
Science is starting to interpret the language that the body uses to communicate with itself. Our body converts sight, sound, and touch into electrical signals and coordinates this stream of info within the brain. As with any electrically based communication signal, once you know the frequency you can listen-in on the chatter.
Here's an interesting example of that in the following video:

It's still crude, but they're dialing-it-in. How far away are we from effective mental read-outs that relate to "memory" and "thought", as well, of a random individual on-the-fly? And then how many people do you know that you would want to have access to such information as it moves around within your daily train of thinking?
