Of the Internet and Intelligence

It's waking up

Total number of Internet Users, Worldwide: 1,114,274,426 (citation)

The human brain contains more than 100 billion neurons, each linked to as many as 10,000 others.

That means the Internet has 1% as many users as a brain has cells. That sounds like quite a difference, but the Internet is still very young. And the Internet doesn

Hi GaiaPrayer,

Quite a fascinating post and I believe that the point you are making is that the Internet will spawn eventually into what is commonly referred to as A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). That is a possible future probability.

These are some fascinating snapshots of the complexity of the Internet although one thing I would disagree on is that you think it is more complex than the human brain. This I do not believe. It's very structure may resemble a human brain but first of all, it does not even have as many users of it as the human brain has neurons.

However, that is really quite pointless to point out since the human users of a computerised communication network do not operate the same way as neurons do in a human brain. It is true that whilst there is electronic communication between users, this is not a similarity to be compared with the neurons of a human brain. The reason for this is that the neurons in a human brain work together and communicate for the highest good of the human body and all that that entails but more than that, it is also part of a biological system which in my belief is also influenced by the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual tides of life; directly too.

A person could argue that this is the same for the Internet as the users who are using it are indirectly influencing the evolution of it by uploading information onto it and communicating with others around the globe. Yet, this is not the same as a biological person being influenced directly.

Very interesting post GaiaPrayer and thank you for posting it.

Kundalini.

This isn't quite meant to be literal. I wouldn't say the internet is achieving consciousness in the same way that humans are conscious. I don't think we're ever going to have a conversation with the internet.

Thinking of the internet being like a cloud is a more appropriate summary. We can see intelligence in the internet like we can see a cloud's shape as a big truck. But the cloud doesn't look like a big truck to anyone but humans. And the internet will display intelligent properties if we look for patterns of intelligence. And I think those intelligent properties are becoming more pronounced as the internet grows.

Interesting thread. But in my opinion, those intelligent properties you speak of are usually overwhelmed by spam, porn, and quite often way too much posturing. The Internet is only as useful as we users are willing to pick and choose where we surf.

Hi Gaiaprayer, thanks for clarifying your thoughts and yes, I do see what you mean with regards to the intelligent properties of the Internet.

Hi John, yes, in my view the Internet is truly a great invention but as you say, it's useability and intelligence can be used for both good and bad means.
